Urinary Tract Infection

Health News

Urinary Tract Infection

What is the urinary tract?
This is the system that makes, stores and carries urine out of the body. It includes the kidneys, the ureters, the bladder and the urethra. The kidneys are bean-shaped organs that make urine. They are located against the spine in the lower back. The two ureters are thin tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. The bladder is like a balloon in the lower front of the abdomen that stores urine. The urethra is the small tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body.

What is a urinary tract infection?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection caused by bacteria (germs) that travel up the urethra into the urinary tract. A UTI can occur anywhere in the urinary tract. Most often, the bladder becomes infected. This is a lower UTI, called a bladder infection or “cystitis.” When bacteria travel up beyond the bladder to the kidneys, this can be more serious. This is called a kidney infection, or “pyelonephritis.”

What causes a UTI?
Bacteria (germs) do not normally live in the urinary tract. A UTI occurs when bacteria travel up into the urinary tract. Most of the time your body can get rid of these bacteria. When it can’t, an infection develops. Any condition that makes it hard to empty the bladder or allows more bacteria to enter can cause a UTI. Most often these bacteria come from normal bacteria in the intestinal tract.

Other risk factors for getting a UTI include:

·    The use of antibacterial douches

·    The use of spermicides or a diaphragm for contraception in women

·    Menopause in women

·    Diabetes

·    Kidney stones

What are the symptoms of a lower UTI, or bladder infection in an adult?

·    A burning sensation or pain with urination

·    Feeling the need to urinate more often than usual

·    Feeling the urge to urinate but not being able to, or going just a little

·    Leaking urine

·    Cloudy, dark or smelly urine, or blood in the urine

·    Mild low stomach pain

What are the symptoms of a UTI in a child?
Older school-aged children can have the same symptoms as an adult. Younger children can have non-specific symptoms. It is important for young children to be seen and evaluated by a health care provider because these same symptoms may be due to other serious conditions or illnesses.

·    Fever

·    Vomiting or diarrhea

·    Stomach pain or back pain

·    Irritability or fussiness

·    Wetting even after the child is potty trained

What are the symptoms of a more serious UTI or kidney infection?
The same symptoms as with a simple UTI may be present. In addition, a kidney infection can cause other symptoms. If any of these symptoms are present, it is important to be seen by a health care provider as soon as possible to determine if a serious infection is present. Delaying treatment can cause serious complications.

·    Fever (temperature higher than 100.4 F or 38 C)

·    Chills and shaking

·    Pain in the flank or side of the lower back

·    Severe abdominal pain

·    Nausea or vomiting

Could these symptoms be something else?
It is important to talk to a health-care provider to make sure, because symptoms of a UTI can also occur with other conditions or illnesses. Persons with infection or inflammation of the urethra may have the same symptoms as a UTI. Painful urination may also be the result of medications, sensitivity to chemicals, something pressing on the bladder or a kidney stone.

How is a UTI diagnosed?
A UTI is usually diagnosed based on the person’s symptoms. A urine test may be done to look for white blood cells. These cells fight infection, so when they are present in the urine, it suggests an infection. A urine culture may also be done. This test uses a small amount of urine to try to grow bacteria. This test usually takes about 48 hours to get results. The urine culture is important for pregnant women, those with frequent infections, or if the symptoms are not going away within 2 to 3 days of starting an antibiotic for treatment of a UTI.

How is a UTI treated?
A simple bladder infection is usually treated with an antibiotic by mouth. Drinking more fluid may help to flush the bacteria out. Cranberry juice/pills do not help to treat a UTI (but may help to prevent them). Sometimes a medicine that numbs the bladder may be prescribed along with the antibiotic. This medicine can make the urine a different color, usually orange. More severe infections may have to be treated in the hospital. Pregnant women should usually need a urine culture. Kidney infections are more common in pregnancy. A kidney infection during pregnancy can cause early labor.

What do I do if I’m not getting better with treatment?
If your symptoms stay the same after taking the medicine for 2 to 3 days, the treatment may not be working. It is important to see a health care provider if you are staying the same, getting worse, or if you are getting new symptoms. It is important to let your health care provider know if you have a fever higher than 100.5 degrees, or have chills, nausea, vomiting or severe back or stomach pain.

How do I prevent a UTI?
There are tips to help prevent a UTI.

·    Drink plenty of fluids.

·    Drinking cranberry juice may help some individuals

·    Urinate when you feel the need rather than holding urine

·    Wear loose-fitting clothing

If you have recurrent infections, you may need further exams and tests. It is important to see a health care professional as additional treatments may be needed.

Beer – The bitter-better drink

Health News

We all know that red wine is rich in heart-friendly antioxidants. But did you know that your favourite beer could be healthier than you realise. Beer can help you lower the risk of heart diseases, strokes, gallstones and kidney stones!

Gone are the days when beer was associated with sagging bellies; your favourite pint is now gaining a status of a drink with health benefits – of course when consumed in moderation! This means, while men can consume about 710 ml of beer per day, women should limit it to 355 ml, to reap the health benefits. If you overdo it, just like any alcohol, beer too can take its toll on your health. So let’s look at the benefits and risks of drinking beer.

Benefits of drinking beer

Helps protect bones: Beer, when consumed in moderation, is said to protect your bone health as it is high in silicon content. Several studies have shown that beer may help in preventing bone loss and also rebuild bone mass in men and young women. However, no benefits have been seen in women in the post-menopausal stage.

Healthy heart: Just like an apple a day keeps the doctor away, a beer a day may help you keep heart diseases away. Moderate consumption of beer has many benefits and one of them is the significant increase in HDL (good) cholesterol. The good cholesterol has anti-clotting effects which keeps the blood vessels clear and healthy.

Healthy kidneys: A study conducted by Finnish researchers found that people who consumed beer were at a lower risk of developing kidney stones when compared to those who drank other types of alcohol. And this benefit could be due to the high water content in beer. In addition, the beer’s hops – a flower which gives beer its bitterness and also acts as a preservative —  is said to prevent kidney stones as it slows down the release of calcium from bones.

Apart from this, beer is also a rich source of vitamins, minerals such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and plenty of B vitamins.

Risks of drinking beer

Beer belly: Everyone says that drinking beer makes you fat or at least develop ‘beer belly’. The fact is that beer contains almost no fat or nutrition. However, it does contain a lot of calories. And if you are trying to lose weight, you must know that alcohol does not let your body burn a lot of stored fat for energy. Actually, when you drink beer, your liver produces a substance called acetate with the help of the alcohol in the beer and your body, instead of using the fat stored on your hips and belly, burns this acetate for energy.

Heartburns: Drinking too much beer can cause heart burn as it contains powerful stimulants of gastric acid secretion leading to gastro-esophageal reflux.

Dehydration: You would do anything for a mug of beer after a long day outside in hot weather. Though beer is 95 per cent water, it is a diuretic. And since the alcohol in the beer interferes with the release of an antidiuretic hormone in your body, it makes you rush to the bathroom more often than you like. So if you drink beer, you will lose fluid through sweating as well as urine, dehydrating you completely. Also, make sure never to drink beer instead of water.

Top Tips to beat acidity

Health News

Most people suffer from acidity these days but the good news is that it is a completely reversible condition. Here are a few tips to beat it!

Are your eating habits irregular? Do you eat out a lot? Do you love spicy food? And have you been experiencing burning sensations in the throat, gas formation, sour taste in your mouth and fatigue? Chances are that you are suffering from acidity.

What causes acidity?

Acidity is caused when the digestive juices produced in our stomach are not utilised completely. In fact the acid helps digest food we eat. However, when there isn’t enough food for digestion or if there is an over production of this acid, you will experience acidity pangs.

In addition, acidity may also be due to eating a meal filled with either sugar or spices, stress, lack of exercise or long gaps between two meals. In most cases, the main trigger for acidity is the food we eat and our eating habits.

Though acidity is one of the most common problems faced by most of us, preventing acidity from occurring is very simple. Here are a few tricks which will help you beat acidity!

Eat at regular intervals

Always eat in small portions. Instead of one heavy breakfast, break it down into two portions and eat it at two-hour intervals. This way, your stomach is neither too full nor completely empty.

Fruits and veggies

Eat a lot of fruits, vegetables and whole wheat grains as this will increase the amount of fibre you consume. The fibre in your food will absorb the extra acid produced in your stomach and also discard it out of your body. Fruits such as bananas, papayas, cucumbers and watermelons go a long way in relieving acidity. Also, dry fruits like raisins, dried figs and almonds help in easing heartburns and the burning sensation in your stomach. Eat more vegetables like drumsticks, beans, pumpkin, cabbage, carrot and spring onions.

Drink water

Drink warm water first thing in the morning. This is said to flush out the excess acid which gets accumulated in your stomach through the night. In addition, drinking tender coconut water three times a day will also help you fight acidity.

Sip milk

If you are suffering from acidity, sip cold milk frequently as milk is an acidity buster and it helps in stabilizing the gastric acids. But, do not think eating ice cream is as same as drinking cold milk. Actually the cream and sugar in the ice cream will just aggravate the acidity.

Chew on tulsi

When you are suffering from heartburns, pop in a few tulsi leaves and chew on them for a while. This can give you instant relief. Also, mint leaves are said to be equally effective. Boil mint leaves in a bowl of water and sip it frequently. This too helps relieve you from acidity.

Aniseed/sauf

Now you know the reason behind the sauf served in restaurants. It not just helps in digestion but is also great for those suffering from acidity. For best results, soak one teaspoon of sauf in one cup of boiled water overnight. Strain this water, add a teaspoon of honey to it and sip on it through the day.

Chew gum

Chewing sugarless gum is said to help in reducing heartburn. Chewing gum produces more saliva, and the alkaline properties in the saliva neutralise the acid.

In addition to above tips:

·         Try and avoid eating out often, eating fatty, oily food and too many chocolates.

·         Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day.

·         Say a big ‘NO’ to cigarettes!

·         Use an extra pillow while lying down, so that your head is slightly elevated. The elevated position helps the acid to remain inside the stomach, instead of moving into the esophagus.

·         Make sure that you have dinner at least two hours before your bedtime as this helps keep acidity at bay.

Must avoid Five Desserts

Health News

Let’s have a look at five desserts you should definitely avoid at all costs.

1. Fried Desserts

No matter how tasty banana fritters or churros might be, they are nothing but a sweet treat filled with unhealthy ingredients and oodles of calories. The batter, which is used to make this dessert, only consists of fat and heaps of sugar. Also, it is important to note that it does not give your body any kind of nutrition at all.

2. Doughnuts.

The doughnut bug bit India just a few years ago. However, this circular sweet treat is not doing the right things to your system. These tiny desserts are made from flour, sugar and cooking oil; everything is refined. Doughnuts are filled with large quantities of calories since they are also deep fried.

3. Muffins

There are a variety of muffins that are available in bakeries today. However, the muffins that are even labeled ‘low-fat’ contain a lot of sugar, thereby filling your body with a lot of calories. In order to ensure that you control the calorie intake, eat it in smaller portions and consume it after short intervals.

4. Ice cream

Ice creams have been a favorite dessert of everyone. It tops the list of favorite desserts and is also used as an integral part of many other desserts. Innovative toppings like whipped cream, sauces and coulis are added to ice creams too. This makes this, the already high calorie dessert, increase in the amount of calories thereby making it unhealthy for your body.

5. Packaged baked foods

Convenience foods and packaged cake mixes are considered to be extremely unhealthy for your body because of the trans fat content in them. To increase its shelf life, producers add a large amount of preservatives, colors and artificial flavors to it. This addition made to the mix makes it harmful and is bad cholesterol for the body.

Eating desserts completes the meal for the most of you. However, making the right choices and consuming healthy substitutes for the same is very crucial for the well-being of your body.

- After every 4 steps hold breath. (neither inhaling nor exhaling)

- Start the above cycle again.

Walking helps in burning calories. It takes 3500 calories to gain or loose one pound.
Following table shows how walking affects the calories :

How Long?
An hour a day, or a total of seven hours a week, is associated with decreased risk for breast cancer and diabetes. As little as a half hour a day, or three hours a week, is associated with decreased risk of heart disease

How to be a good parent

HOW TO BE A GOOD PARENT?

Express love and affection.

  • A gentle cuddle, a little encouragement, appreciation, approval or even a smile can go a long way to boost the confidence and well-being of your children. Sadly, many children seek this kind of acceptance from their peers.
  • Tell them you love them every day.
  • Give lots of hugs and some kisses
  • Love them unconditionally; don't force them to be who you think they should be in order to earn your love. Let them know that you will always love them no matter what.

Listen to them

  • Express interest in your children and involve yourself in his and her life.
  • Create an atmosphere in which they can come to you with a problem however large or small.

Help them feel safe

  • Respect their privacy as you would want them to respect yours; for example, if you teach your child that your room is out of boundaries to them, respect the same with their room. Allow them to feel that once they enter their room they can know that no one will look through their drawers, or read their diary.
  • Instill in them, a sense of belonging by displaying individual and family portraits on the walls of the house.
  • Don't argue with your spouse in front of the children. If they are sleeping, argue quietly. Modern divorce rates have children feeling insecure and fearful when they hear parents bickering. In addition, children will learn to argue with each other the same way they hear their parents argue with each other. Show them that when people disagree, they can discuss their differences peacefully.
  • Avoid favoritism. Surveys have shown that most parents have favorites, but most children believe they are the favorite. If your children are quarreling, don't choose sides.
  • Give up your vices: gambling, alcohol and drugs can jeopardize your child's financial security. Smoking almost always introduces health hazards to your child's environment. Second-hand smoke has been linked to several respiratory ailments in children. It could also contribute to the early death of a parent. Alcohol and drugs might also introduce health hazards or violence to your child's environment.

Provide order

  • Set boundaries such as bedtimes and curfews, so they learn that they have limitations. By doing so, they actually get a sense of being loved and cared about by their parents. They might rebel at those boundaries, but inwardly enjoy knowing that concerned parents love them.
  • Encourage responsibility by giving them jobs or "chores" to do and as a reward for those jobs give them some kind of privilege (money, extended curfew, extra play time, etc). As "punishment" for not doing these jobs they have the corresponding privilege revoked. Even the youngest of children can learn this concept of reward/consequence. As your child grows, give them more responsibilities and more rewards/consequences for not completing those responsibilities.
  • Teach them what is right and wrong. If you are religious, take them to the religious institute that you follow. If you are agnostic, teach them your moral stance things. In either case, don't be hypocritical or be prepared for your child to point out that you are not "practicing what you preach".
  • Make sure they have a healthy way of life. Many parents do this the wrong way. Instead of forcing children to try a child to eat something, give them a choice between to things. It can push children, especially pre teens and up, to a very emotional point if you begin to harp for them to change their eating habits. If they want something unhealthy, suggest the smaller size. If you know they favorite a certain unhealthy food at a restaurant, taking them there a lot is not good. And if you start explainng to the child that it is unhealthy or that they shouldn't get it... they may take it the wrong way and feel like you are insulting them. Once this happens they will no longer want to go out to eat with you and they will feel bad eating around you which could make them want to sneak and hide junk food from you. When you tell them they can't have something or shouldn't... it can create one of two things. One, it could make them want it even more and find out how to get it anyways. Two, it could make them feel extremely bad and they will go all out with all unhealthy foods EXCEPT that one which could be worse. When trying to enforce healthy eating habits, start it at a young age. Giving rewards of candy to children is great but once htey will get older some feel they should reward themselves. While they are younger, start them out with healthier snacks. Instead of chips, try goldfish, grapes, etc. The eating habits they learn as they are younger are the ones they continue to have. Also, never make your child finish their plate if they say they are hungry. This can continue throughout their life causing them to believe that no matter what portions are on their plate.
  • Don't routinely do things for your children that they can learn to do for themselves. While getting them a glass of water before bed is a nice way to make them get to sleep faster, don't do it so often that they come to expect it.
  • Model moderation and responsibility when it comes to drinking. Explain that they will have to wait until they are old enough to enjoy a drink with friends and talk about the importance of designated drivers. Failure to discuss these issues early sometimes contributes to sneaking and dangerous experimentation. Again, don't be hypocritical or your child will (more than likely) ignore your advice.

Praise your children

  • Avoid comparing your children to others, especially siblings. Each child is individual and unique. Celebrate their differences and instill in each child the desire to pursue their interests and dreams. Failure to do so may give your child an inferiority complex, an idea that they can never be good enough in your eyes.
  • Teach your children that it is okay for them to be different and they do not have to follow the crowd. Teach them right from wrong when then are young, and they will (more often than not) be able to make their own decisions, instead of listening to others.
  • Remember that your child is not an extension of yourself. Your child is an individual under your care, not a chance for you to relive your life through them.

Avoid criticism by focusing on the behavior.

  • When your child acts out in a harmful and spiteful manner, tell him or her that such behavior is unacceptable and suggest alternatives. Avoid statements such as: "You're bad." "Go away!" etc (as difficult as it may be).
  • Be assertive yet kind when pointing out what they have done wrong. Be stern, but not cross, when you tell them what you expect.
  • Avoid public humiliation. If they misbehave in public, take them aside, and scold them privately.
  • Model the behavior and character you hope your children will adopt and live by the rules you set. Show them by example in addition to verbal explanations. Children have a tendency to become what they see and hear unless they make a conscious and concerted effort to break the mold.

Be consistent

  • Enforce rules that apply to every person leading a happy and productive life. Not just the rules of your ideal person.
  • Enforce the same rules all the time, and resist your child's attempts to manipulate you into making exceptions.
  • Control your temper.
  • Communicate clearly. Children should be very familiar with the consequences of their actions. If you give them a punishment, be sure they understand the reason and the fault, if you cannot articulate the reason and how they are at fault the punishment will not have the discouraging effects you desire.
  • Life is a great teacher. Don't be too quick to rescue your child from the results of their own actions if the consequences are not overly severe. Example: Cutting themselves may hurt, but it's better than leaving them unaware of why sharp objects should be avoided.

Spend time with each child individually, try to divide your time equally if you have more than one child.

Be a role model - Young kids are like sponges. As parents we are our children's first role model. Pay attention to what you say or do around them and think about what kind of example you are making.

  • Set aside a day to go to a park, theme parks, museum or library depending on their interests.
  • Attend school functions. Do homework with them. Visit their teacher at open house. Even if it means taking some time away from work. Remember that children grow fast, and soon will be on their own. Your boss may or may not remember that you missed that meeting, but your child will most certainly remember that you didn't attend the play they were in.
  • Want to teach kids about charity? Get involved and take your kids with you to a soup kitchen or homeless shelter and help serve up meals. Explain to them why you do acts of charity so they understand why they should.
  • Teach kids about chores by setting a schedule and having them help you out. Don't tell your child to do something, but ask for their help. The earlier they learn to help you, the longer they will be willing to.
  • Want your kids to listen to you? Show them you can listen to them.
  • If you want your son or daughter to learn to share, set a good example and share your things with them.

Allow them to experience life for themselves - But don't just lose total control. Don't make decisions for them all the time, they must learn how to live with the consequences from the choices they make. After all, they will have to learn to think for themselves sometime. It's best they start when you are there to help minimize the negative consequences and accentuate the positive ones. They need to learn that their own actions have consequences (good and bad). By doing so, it helps them to become good decision makers and problem solvers so that they are prepared for independence and adulthood. Do not miss this crucial step. You must explain their options, and the consequences of each one, then live with whatever option they select.

Spend a lot of time with them and love them with all your heart, but don't smother them. There's a big difference between protecting someone and imprisoning them.

Tips

• If you're trying to quit a habit, look into groups that can help you overcome it. Always get support, and have someone you can talk to when you begin to get a craving for your habit. Remember that you're not only helping yourself, but you're helping your child as well.
• Improve your child's social skills.
• Reflect on your own childhood frequently. Identify the mistakes your parents made, and make an effort to avoid them. Every generation of parents gets to make a whole set of new mistakes.
• Encourage introspection by sharing with your children your own self-evaluations.
• Address your needs to be loved but value your children's needs over others. Do not abandon your children for love interests. Make your child a priority when you are dating, and do not put your child in danger by introducing someone new into the household that you do not know well. Children need to feel safe, secure and loved. If you are suddenly leaving them out and not addressing their needs in order to tend to a new boyfriend or girlfriend, your children will grow to feel insecure and abandoned. Love is needed by everyone, but not at the expense of your child's emotional health. This also applies to older children. A teen who is getting ready to start their adult life needs the support of a parent more than ever. Do not think that just because they are almost 18 that you can leave them to figure it all out on their own. Your children are yours for life.

Warnings

• Do not be afraid to be a parent. Do your best, be their friend, but never let them forget you are their parent.
• Parenting does not stop when a child grows up. Being a good parent remains a life-long role. But remember that once they become adults, the decisions they make in life are ultimately theirs.
• Do not strictly follow the parental behavioral stereotypes of your culture, race, ethnic group, family, or other defining factor. Please do not believe that there is only one way to raise a child.
• Do not force them by beating or hurting them. It will only cause resentment and make them go against you. Also, you will get arrested and your child will be placed in foster care. If you have multiple children, they may be separated.

6 Drinks to Fight Age

Health News

These six drinks fight aging. See what they are and when to down them.

WATER
When to Drink: At the Alarm

Guzzle water, Dr. Lodge suggests. Hydrating will help beat that groggy feeling and make your skin look its glowy best (both now and later in life), says David E. Bank, M.D., a dermatologist in Mount Kisco, New York.

COFFEE

When to Drink: At Breakfast

Coffee may help your heart and (if you take it black) metabolism, and it reduces risk for some types of cancer, studies show.

GREEN TEA
When to Drink:
 At Lunch

Sip tea. Green kick-starts metabolism and can help fend off breast cancer, says Jonathan R. Cole, M.D., medical director of the California Health and Longevity Institute. Black may lower blood pressure, research from the University of Western Australia suggests.

HOT COCOA
When to Drink:
 P.M. Snack

Hot cocoa (have it over ice if you can't take the heat) has more antioxidants than does coffee, red wine or green tea, a study from Cornell University reveals. Great for your heart and skin.

RED WINE
When to Drink:
 At dinner

Enjoy a glass of red wine: Piceatannol, a compound your body makes when you drink vino, could stunt fat-cell growth (woot!), the Journal of Biological Chemistry reports.

MILK
When to Drink:
 Before Bed

Grab milk-your skeleton will love the calcium, and your muscles will love the protein. You'll wake up even stronger.

3 foods all men should eat

Health News

A varied, balanced diet is the cornerstone of healthy living for everyone, yet healthy eating can sometimes mean different things depending on your gender.

While there are some foods we should all be eating more of, men and women also have their own set of dietary requirements as well as their own unique health concerns. Here are three foods all men should eat.

Tomatoes
Tomatoes are possibly one of the best "superfoods" around, and the popular fruit has particular benefits for men. Studies have suggested that the lycopene found in tomatoes may reduce risk ofcolorectal cancer, lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease; the leading cause of death in men. Research has also shown that men who frequently eat foods rich in lycopene may drastically reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer.

Broccoli

Broccoli - along with other cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and sprouts - contains a strong cancer-fighting chemical, sulphoraphane, which research has suggested may reduce men's risk of developing bladder cancer (a cancer more commonly affecting women than men), prostate cancerand colorectal cancer.

Oysters
Oysters are the highest natural source of zinc; an essential requirement for men's fertility and sexual health. Zinc not only helps to maintain healthy testosterone levels in men, but it is essential for healthy sperm production. On top of this, zinc deficiency may be responsible for hair loss in men, so an increased intake may benefit men's appearance as well as health.

Belly fat is worse for your health than obesity

Health News

Being a healthy weight may not be as important as where you carry fat on your body when it comes to future health risks, a new study has found.

If your tummy is your problem area, you may be 2.75 times more likely to die from heart disease than if you were obese.

The new research has shown that having a low BMI does not guarantee being at a low risk of heart disease, as those of us with ‘central obesity’ i.e. if you carry your weight around your middle, were shown to be at greater risk of health problems.

Visceral fat, which is fat that sits around the organs of your abdomen, has been proven to be very damaging to your heart.

A study following 12,785 adults over 14 years showed that participants with a normal BMI, but a high hip to waist ratio had the highest risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

Worringly, it was not just heart disease – as this group of people were also at a 2.08 times higher risk of dying from any cause.

"The high risk of death may be related to a higher visceral fat accumulation in this group, which is associated with insulin resistance and other risk factors," said study researcher Dr. Karine Sahakyan, from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

How much sleep do you need daily?

Health News

7.5 hours – 9 hours. This is the number of hours that adults must spend sleeping every night. The reason why this number is important is because the brain re-energises your body while you sleep. If you sleep any less, the brain cannot complete its night time duties and as a result you are not able to give your best during the day. No matter how tight your schedule is, do try to get the minimum amount of sleep.

We have given you enough gyaan on sleep and it's merits. Hope you give sleep the importance it deserves and spend sufficient time in bed Sleeping.

Home remedies for Cold

COLDS

# Herbs 'n' Spice is warm 'n' nice
Combine 28 grams sliced fresh ginger, 1 broken up cinnamon stick, 1 teaspoon coriander seeds, 3 cloves, 1slice of lime, 1/liter water. Simmer for 15 minutes, strain. Drink a hot cupful every 2 hours. The lime has plenty of vitamin C (a recommended cold fighter) while the ginger and spices provide the antibacterial effect

# OR Add 1/2" ginger, 6 tulsi leaves, 1 bay leaf, 3 peppercorns, and 1 clove to 1/2 liter water with palm sugar to taste. Boil for 15 minutes. Strain and drink hot, as often as you please. The pepper dilates blood vessels in the nose and stimulates secretions which help drain sinuses. Chilli powder or red pepper also has the same effect and, in addition, possesses anti inflammatory properties.

# Juice a Ginger Take an inch of ginger and wash thoroughly. Scrape the skin and chop into 3 to 4 pieces. Add a tablespoon of water. Churn thoroughly in a mixer and strain out the juice in a gauzy cloth. Discard the pulp. Add a teaspoon of honey (a mild antibacterial), a pinch of turmeric (today a proven antiseptic), stir well. Drink half in the morning and half in the evening. The mixture keeps well under refrigeration.

# Chug some chicken soup It attacks a cold or flu in at least three ways: The fluids and minerals help rehydrate and energise your body; the spices provide decongestant benefits; and if you huddle over your bowl as you eat, your mucous membranes will get a soothing steam bath.
Bring a liter of chicken broth to a boil. Add a teaspoon of chilli powder and a thumb sized piece of ginger, grated. Simmer for 15 minutes. Garnish each bowl with a raw, minced garlic clove and chopped scallions. Have four bowls a day when you are at your sickest.

# Go for a Garlic Its pungent active ingredient, allicin (the same one in onions), works especially well against infections such as bronchitis and sinusitis, which often result from colds and flu. Some experts believe allicin destroys the cold and flu viruses themselves, though this theory hasn't been scientifically proven.
Eat one or two cloves a day of raw or lightly sauteed garlic, all at once or in small doses.
